As many of you know, I'm slightly obsessed with reading and writing. In fact, the this long weekend consisted of 1) Going to the public library 2) reading 3) writing. I'm just one book away from being a complete social outcast. I even gave up going to the movies for reading. It's a disease.
Recently I have been reading a lot of short stories instead of whole books. It's great because I can jump around from one author to the next, and pick up on their various writing styles.
I highly suggest that everyone read the short story Brownies by ZZ Packer. ZZ is able to incorporate wit and humor into stories that would otherwise be seen as grave and depressing. She creates strong characters her stories, characters that aren't afraid to speak their minds.
I also love how ZZ starts her stories. The first line of a story must capture the reader, and ZZ does this perfectly in the first line of her story Brownies:
"By our second day at Camp Crescendo, the girls in my Brownie troop had decided to kick the asses of each and every girl in Brownie Troop 909."
